Scopo del presente saggio è sottolineare come la storia del Papato abbia avuto un profondo impatto sulla progressiva conformazione del diritto canonico occidentale, a partire dal noto caso di studio della incerta reazione inizialmente manifestata nei confronti delle Tesi luterane e della Riforma Protestante nel Sedicesimo secolo.
